Spital Brook is a minor tributary of the River Lea, which originates in Hoddesdonpark Wood in
Hertfordshire, England. The brook flows towards the east, passing through Barclay Park and the former Hoddesdon Common before joining the River Lea. A neighbouring unnamed stream to the south has been redirected to create ornamental waterbodies in Broxbournebury’s former parklands. Spital Brook crosses Ermine Street, a Roman road, before running underneath Cock Lane and the A10. The original crossing place, or ford, of Spital Brook in Cock Lane is still present, and the original path of the brook followed a north-south direction parallel to the current route.
