Little Berkhamsted is an ancient manor mentioned in the Domesday Book as “Berchehamstede”, which was held by Hardwin de Scales. The Parish Church of St Andrew, which dates back to the 12th century, is built with Kentish ragstone and has a wooden bell-cote for three bells. However, the church was entirely rebuilt in 1647, and most of the original structure was lost during the 19th-century reconstruction.  Another notable landmark in the village is Stratton’s Tower, also known as “Stratton’s Folly”, a 97 ft tall observation tower with five storeys. It was constructed in 1789 for John Stratton, Gentleman, who resided at “Gay’s”, which has since been renamed The Gage.
