While development along the road has yet to reach the village, the area still retains its rural character. The village is split by the River Mimram, where an 18th-century water mill was built, and is just north of the River Lea. The village’s northern boundary is formed by Panshanger Park, which is home to the Great Oak, believed by some to be the oldest oak tree in England.
