Hertfordshire, has a population of 466 according to the 2011 Census, up from 435 in 2001. The village, which is situated about three miles south of Hertford, is served by Bayford railway station. The Parish Church of St Mary is located about a quarter of a mile north of the village and was rebuilt in 1870 near the site of the old church, which was first mentioned in 1222. The church houses a 15th-century font and several 16th- and 17th-century monuments to the Knighton family. William Yarrell, a well-known ornithologist admired for his precise scientific work, is buried in the churchyard.
