Great Amwell and Little Amwell were originally recorded as a single parish named “Emmewell” in the
Domesday Book of 1086. By the 17th century, the village was referred to as Amwell Magna, Much Amwell, or Great Amwell. The name is thought to have originated from Emma’s Well, a spring located northeast of the village that was utilized by Sir Hugh Myddelton as one of the sources for the New River in the early 17th century. It is believed that the well was named after Queen Emma of Normandy, the spouse of King Cnut the Great. A nearby white stone memorial bears inscriptions from the works of John Scott of Amwell (1730-1783), a Quaker poet.
